It’s articles like this that gave me the reason to stop reading Pitchfork years ago. To so pretentiously talk about “meaning” is ridiculous. There’s no bar-to-entry for artists to enter the artistic field. Nobody mandates that you “must be this good to ride.” Is M.I.A. the best rapper around? No. Did she grow up in a part of the world and does she have first-hand experience with the issues she talks about, even though she may do some of those issues an injustice? Yes.

The fact is, M.I.A. is a rapper. That’s it. Done and done. She’s not a political activist, she’s not a freedom-fighter for Sri Lanka and the third world. She’s a musician and an entertainer. But if you had to compare M.I.A. and her messages - her poorly constructed and presented messages about something extremely important - to, for instance, Justin Bieber - and his pointless messages about absolutely nothing relevant to the world - I’m pretty sure the former is doing the better job of representing serious issues to the public.
